Private residence Mayfair

Commissioned by a private client in the heart of Mayfair, this mosaic was created to transform a balcony within a truly historic building once used by Sir Winston Churchill and the British government during the Second World War. The setting, refined yet compact, called for a design that would bring balance, light, and a quiet sense of elegance to the space.
The brief was for something simple and modern, with a muted colour palette to complement the dining furniture and surrounding stone.

The resulting design features clean geometric lines that accentuate the space rather than compete with it, guiding the eye naturally toward the centre and creating the illusion of greater width. Crafted from black quartz and a softly toned white stone chosen for its natural inclusions, the mosaic combines precision with character. The subtle texture of the materials mirrors the patina of the building’s historic façade, while the crisp black detailing provides a modern rhythm within the classical architecture.

A discreet 20-centimetre border of paving defines the piece, both as a visual frame and a practical feature for drainage. Scattered pebbles along the outer edge allow rainwater to flow freely — an understated solution for the London climate. Viewed from above, the pattern reveals its symmetry and craftsmanship, but its true effect unfolds at eye level, where the mosaic aligns with the doorway leading from the living space.

The result is a refined composition that bridges eras — a contemporary mosaic perfectly at home within a place steeped in British history.
